Solid Food Updates

I wanted to share that suddenly this past weekend at 5 and a half months DJ suddenly decided to take to solids. It really was like a light switched on and she wants to eat now. As I mentioned earlier she did have a bad head cold and just finished up antibiotics so maybe that’s why the sudden change but I’m thinking she just needed some practice and wanted to start on her own time.

Before we were feeding her every few nights after her milk. She would fuss in the high chair and get aggravated very easily. On Saturday when J went to feed her squash she suddenly was grabbing the spoon, opening her mouth, keeping the food in her mouth.

She ate a whole “cube” of squash and then about a tablespoon of rice in one sitting! We are now sending two cubes of food to daycare for in the mornings.

This was her this week with sweet potatoes!

Starting Solids

So, as you saw before I starting making some baby food because our little DJ has started solids! Our doctor gave her the go ahead at her 4 month check up. We decided we wanted to wait until Christmas for our first little taste (just to make it special).

The first food we started with was actually avocado! We decided to start with this mainly because J and I love avocados and they happen to be in season right now. I cut the fruit in half and scooped out a little bit of the inner flesh. I had to add quite a bit of breastmilk to make it runny but I think it came out to a great consistency. She actually did pretty good eating it too!

She ate about a teaspoon of avocado three times over the course of a week before we left to go visit my parents for New Years. We weren’t sure what to try next so we went ahead and gave her some rice cereal.

Again, we mixed it with breastmilk for a runny consistency. My dad fed her this the first time and I think experience was on his side because he got her to eat quite a bit of it. It also probably helped that she was entertained in the high chair while 4 other adults laughed at her and took her picture! She has ate this now 3 times over the last week and its going well.

Unfortunately she has a really bad stuffy nose right now so I just don’t think starting solids is a great idea right now. I think we are going to hold off a bit longer until shes feeling better and showing more interest (and less tongue reflex).
